Worli, Dharavi under control, but byculla our real worry, say civic officials

Persistent efforts by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in controlling Covid-19 spread in Mumbai have finally started showing results as situation in Worli-Koliwada and Dharavi, two of the most affected hotspots in the city, have been brought under control, say municipal officials. But the same cannot be claimed about Byculla in the ‘E’ ward, which over the last few days has seen a steady rise in positive cases.

Civic officials said that Byculla remains the most troublesome area. On April 16, Worli in ‘G-South’ had 390 positive cases and E ward had 162 cases. However, BMC’s April 27 report says that cases in E ward at 475 showed a rapid rise compared with 628 cases in G-South.

“In spite of a difficult situation in Worli-Koliwada and Dharavi with congested spaces, we have managed to keep it under check, the cases that we are getting are mostly from the containment zones and as per our expectation. However, we are now getting more cases from E ward, primarily in Byculla,” said a civic official.

BMC officials said that they expect more cases to emerge from Byculla. “We may see a huge jump in cases from Byculla as the peak has not been reached there,” he said.

BMC is also worried over the rising graph of infected persons among health care professionals and government officials.

Meanwhile, state’s health minister Rajesh Tope said that the city’s first plasma therapy experiment on a patient at Leelavati Hospital has come out successful and the patient has recovered. He added that another such experiment would be carried out on a patient at Nair Hospital.
