Jammu and Kashmir: Octogenarian corona warrior comes to rescue of poor

As the nation battles coronavirus pandemic, many heart touching stories of samaritans helping the poor and needy are emerging from different parts of the country.

An 81-year-old man from Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district who runs a small water mill in Panthal block is helping poor farmers and villagers in this time of crisis. Despite facing financial constraints himself, Shankar Singh says he is grinding grains for his villagers without taking money from them.

The octogenarian says he goes to work even at this age so that he is able to provide relief to his fellow villagers. His gesture of providing free grains has come as a relief for villagers.

Speaking to India Today, Shankar Singh said he got inspired by the philanthropic work of others in these difficult times.

“Coronavirus is a deadly virus and these days many people are helping others. I own a chakki, so I decided to provide free grinding service to villagers. I would continue to do it till the end of this health crisis,” said Shankar Singh.

Meanwhile, the local administration has praised the octogenarian for his gesture. “We will honour him for his selfless service. We will also support him in all his social endeavours,” said Dr Anirudh Rai, Assistant Commissioner Development, Reasi district.

“Shankar Singh is doing great work. We appreciate his gesture and wish him good health,” said Mohd Sayeed, Assistant Director, Food and Supplies Department, Reasi district.
