Chandigarh: Coronavirus cases double in 4 days as UT sees 14 new cases

As many as 14 new cases in a single day in Chandigarh on Wednesday have doubled the novel coronavirus case count in the UT in four days.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in Chandigarh has now climbed to 73 after 14 fresh cases were reported on Wednesday. Chandigarh has added 43 new cases in the last four days from 30 cases on April 25.

The highest number of Covid-19 cases has come from a single pocket of Bapu Dham Colony in Chandigarh which has reported 23 cases so far. Bapu Dham Colony is Chandigarh’s third most-affected pocket after Kachi Colony area of Dhanas and Sector 38B.

Most of these cases are Class 4 workers in hospitals, their family members and those who came in direct contact with a hospital attended who had earlier tested positive.

The hospital attendant is a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, was identified as the spreader to colony residents and his family. This patient had also reportedly thrown a party at his home and had invited neighbours.

Amid spike in cases, the Chandigarh administration is also worried about the fact that as many as 16 doctors have tested positive for coronavirus so far.

Taking note of the situation, the UT administration has called an emergency meeting of government functionaries to take a call. The administration is likely to favour an extension in the curfew as the city failed to move from a red zone to orange zone.
