Coronavirus: India records highest single-day spike of 7,964 cases in past 24 hours, tally touches 173,763

Coronavirus tally in India climbed to 1.73 lakh as the country recorded its biggest jump in the Covid-19 cases on Saturday morning. Beginning Friday, India recorded the highest-ever spike of 7,964 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. India’s tally of coronavirus cases has climbed to 173,763.

In the past 24 hours, 265 people succumbed to the coronavirus infection. With the fresh number of casualties, India’s death toll has climbed to 4,971 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

India’s coronavirus tally of over 1.73 lakh also includes 86,422 active cases, according to the latest data by the Union Health Ministry.

As many as 82,370 people in India have been recovered from the infection, the health ministry said.

On Friday, India’s coronavirus death toll surpassed that of China after it reported a total of 4,706 fatalities, while it overtook Turkey to become the ninth worst-hit nation by the pandemic with 1,65,799 Covid-19 cases.

The country registered 175 deaths and a record 7,466 fresh coronavirus infection cases in the last 24 hrs till Friday 8 am, according to the Union Health Ministry.

According to the John Hopkins University (JHU) data, India has now overtaken Turkey and is the ninth most affected nation in terms of COVID-19 cases after the US, Brazil, Russia, UK, Spain, Italy, France and Germany.
