With 165 positive Covid-19 cases and 35 deaths, Ujjain emerges as new challenge in MP

After Indore and Bhopal, Ujjain town in Madhya Pradesh is fast emerging as a coronavirus problem spot. With 166 positive cases and 35 deaths due to coronavirus, the temple town of Madhya Pradesh is already designated as a hotspot and has earned the distinction of recording the highest death rate of 26.29 per cent.

On Monday night, the state government transferred the Ujjain Collector Shashank Mishra and appointed Indore Municipal Corporation Commissioner Asheesh Singh in his place.

Asheesh Singh, who had earlier served as the municipal commissioner in Ujjain during the Simhastha Mela in 2016, has been sent to the city with the understanding that he knows it well.

The action came after the rising number of cases showed no signs of control of the spread of the novel coronavirus.

A Bharatiya Janata BJP corporator from the town, Muzaffar Hussain, 55, had tested positive in April. Hussain died at the Ardi Gardi Medical College where, while undergoing treatment, he had shot a video of himself, alleging the abysmal condition of food and amenities at the medical college.

The state government claims that it has carried out the highest per million testing of the corona suspects in Ujjain among all cities of Madhya Pradesh. A total of 3,470 tests have been conducted. Out of which, 2,475 people tested negative and 166 came out to be positive.
