Twin migrant deaths at Bihar’s Muzaffarpur station put Railways and Shramik trains in dock

A heart-rending video of child trying to wake up his dead mother at the Muzaffarpur railway station has triggered outrage among many and raised questions about the services of the Indian Railways.

The deceased woman, Arbina Khatoon, was travelling with her sister and brother-in-law from Gujarat in a Shramik Special train. She died around 2:30 PM on Monday, an hour before the train made a stop at Muzaffarpur. The woman was travelling to Katihar with her sister, sister’s husband and two children.

The Railways Ministry on Wednesday issued a clarification, saying that the woman had been unwell when she boarded the train at Ahmadabad on May 23. The family got off at Muzaffarpur station on May 25 when she died.

There are two videos of Mohammed Wazeer, Arbina’s brother-in-law, who accompanied the woman during the journey, explaining the cause of her death. In one of the videos, he claims that the woman died of some mysterious illness whereas in the other video he blames her death on extreme heat. He even is heard claiming that fans in the railway coach were working.

He, however, claimed having received no medical help during the journey. A migrant worker himself, Wazeer also claimed that the woman’s husband had left her two years ago.

Railway police sources at Muzaffarpur told India Today TV that the district administration later arranged an ambulance to transport the women’s body to Katihar where she was headed to.

This is the second such death at the Muzaffarpur Railway station on May 25. A 4-year-old child identified as Irshad, who had returned with her parents from Delhi, died at the station the same day.
