Roger Federer warms up for Australian Open with some tennis on the sand

Roger Federer is gearing up to defend his Australian Open title in the season’s first Grand Slam, starting January 14 in Melbourne.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, will warm up to the Australian Open at the Hopman Cup, starting December 29 in Perth. The 37-year-old will team with Belinda Bencic for Switzerland as the duo look to retain their title.

Federer will be hoping for some good match practice and, it seems, there is plenty of it available for him as he may face the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and Frances Tiafoe of the United States in the singles rubbers at the exhibition event.

Federer and Bencic’s mixed doubles showdown against Serena Williams and Tiafoe is one of the most-anticipated ties at the upcoming tournament.

Ahead of the new season, Federer visited the Pinnacles in Western Australia and interacted with some kids and played a bit of tennis on the scenic sand there.

“It’s a great pleasure to be back here in Australia. I’ve come to a lot of love over the years and I’m a big fan of road trips, not many people know that but it’s one of my big dreams after I retire once and I have time,” Federer said.

“I can’t wait for the Hopman Cup to get around and try my best to defend the title from last year, we had a blast with Belinda. I hope this is going to kickstart another great season for me because the last two have been absolutely crazy good for me to be honest.

“I couldn’t have imagined that kind of a return after my knee problems, I’m just very happy that things are going so well and Hopman Cup is a good place for me to start the season with.
