The four Nirbhaya gangrape and murder convicts were on Friday hanged seven years after the brutal crime shook the entire nation.
Mukesh Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) were executed at 5.30 am in Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court rejected their last and final appeal on Thursday.
Besides today’s hanging, there are many other infamous executions that occurred in the premises of Tihar Jail.
Here are some of them:
Afzal Guru | A convict in Parliament Street terror attack, Afzal Guru was hanged on February 9, 2013.
Ranga and Billa | The duo was executed for kidnapping and murdering Geeta Chopra and Sanjay Chopra, in 1978. There are reports which indicate that the duo raped the girl who was a minor at the time of her death. They were hanged on January 31, 1982.
Kartar and Ujagar Singh | On October 9, 1983, contract killers Kartar and Ujagar Singh were executed for the murder of Vidya Jain in 1973. Curiously her husband and his friend, who hired the killer, were sentenced to life by Delhi High Court. Ujagar and Kartar were sentenced to death.
Maqbool Bhat | On February 11, 1984, Maqbool Bhat, was executed for the murder of Indian diplomat Ravindra Mhatre. He was also behind the hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane in 1976. But he was hanged to death in within a week in1 984 after he was found involved in kidnapping and murder of Indian diplomat Ravindra Mhatre in Birmingham.
Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh |: On January 6, 1989, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were executed for the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi. Satwant was one of the two bodyguards who fired shots at PM Indira Gandhi and Kehar Singh was part of the conspiracy.
