Kitchen staff member at Officers Training Academy in Chennai tests positive for coronavirus

A kitchen staff member at the Officers Training Academy in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai has been tested positive for coronavirus.

The Covid-19 patient, who used to assist the cook in the kitchen at the OTA, showed symptoms on May 3 and was tested for the new virus.

The test results, that came back on May 4, confirmed that the patient contracted the novel coronavirus.

Everyone who came in contact with the Covid-19 patient has now been identified and quarantined.

There are no training cadets on campus as of now. There are few officers and skeletal support staff working at the OTA campus in Chennai now.

The number of coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu continued its upward trend till Tuesday, going past the 500-mark check this for the second consecutive day as Chief Minister K Palaniswami attributed the rise to testing a higher number of samples.

“Daily about 12,000 people are being tested and only due to such a high number of tests is the number of those turning positive also on the rise,” CM Palaniswami said.

Palaniswami said the public need not fear over more people testing positive as anti-Covid-19 initiatives were being pursued on all fronts, including prevention.

Among the reasons for the rapid spread of the contagion in the state capital was a higher density of population in cramped localities and through public toilets, Palaniswami said.

To address such concerns, disinfection was being carried out thrice a day in containment zones and public conveniences were often cleaned up. Mobile testing facilities were also being deployed, Palaniswami pointed out.
