HIV case: unnamed doctors, nurses booked

Sattur Town police have registered a criminal case for negligence against unnamed doctors and nurses at Sattur Government Hospital and blood bank employees in Sivakasi in connection with the shocking incident of a pregnant woman getting infected with HIV after a blood transfusion.

The girl, who was anaemic, was given blood at Sattur GH on December 3. The police have booked the accused under Sections 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police M. Rajarajan said based on the report of the high-level committee constituted by the Health department to probe into the incident, penal action would be initiated by the police.

The blood donated by a youth on November 30 was transfused the woman. Already three employees of the blood bank have been dismissed from service in this connection.

Meanwhile, State Human Rights Commission member D. Jayachandran said in Tirunelveli on Wednesday that a suo motu investigation would be initiated in the case.

Responding to queries from journalists, he said the Commission would also ensure the right compensation for the victim.
