E-commerce giant Flipkart has temporarily suspended all its services in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for complete lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus. The Walmart-owned company’s sudden announcement has come despite the fact that central government has included e-commerce services as one of the essential services in its essential list notification, put out Tuesday evening.
Flipkart has marked all products as ‘Out Of Stock’ on the search option of its app and website.
“Your needs have always been our priority, and our promise is that we will be back to serve you, as soon as possible,” a message reads on the Flipkart’s website.
Flipkart is yet to reveal when it will resume its operations. The statement reads, “these are difficult times, times like no other. Never before, have communities stayed apart to stay safe. Never before, has being at home meant helping the nation.”The announcement comes a day after Amazon India on Tuesday said it has temporarily stopped taking orders and disabled shipment of low-priority products as it focuses on delivery of essential items like household staples, hygiene and other high-priority products amid the country-wide lockdown to fight the spread of coronavirus.Many reports of harassing of delivery partners of the e-commerce companies including Grofers and Bigbasket, by policemen in different parts of India, have surfaced on Twitter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday declared a three-week nationwide “complete lockdown” from midnight Tuesday in the world’s largest such exercise aimed at stemming the spread of coronavirus that has infected 557 people and claimed the lives of 10 in the country.
