Coronavirus update: Total number of cases rise to 112 in Maharashtra

Maharashtra reported five new coronavirus cases since Tuesday night, taking the number of cases in the state to 112, the highest in the country so far, officials said.

The latest cases are from Sangli district, where five members of a family in Islampur tested coronavirus positive, the officials said today.

“We are checking if the five have a recent travel history within India or outside,” an official said.

Ten more cases were detected in the state on Tuesday, and eight were confirmed late on Monday night.

Meanwhile, a Pune-based couple, who were the first coronavirus patients in Maharashtra, have now twice tested negative for the deadly coronavirus and are set to be discharged from hospital on Wednesday, a health official said.The couple, admitted to a hospital here on March 9, will be taken home in an ambulance of the Pune Municipal Corporation.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown to stop the spread of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in the country. He appealed to the people not to panic as all essential commodities like medicines and milk would be available during the shutdown. “My fellow citizens, there is absolutely no need to panic. Essential commodities, medicines etc. would be available. Centre and various state governments will work in close coordination to ensure this. Together, we will fight COVID-19 and create a healthier India,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India climbed to 562 today. At present, there are 512 active cases in India. A total of 40 people have been discharged from hospital, according to Ministry of Health and Welfare.
