10% quota for general category to be implemented in Bihar soon: Nitish Kumar

He said the provision has been made in the Constitution and will be implemented in the state shortly while addressing a press conference.

The quota allocation for weaker sections in general category has been lauded by Kumar, who believes that it will help in providing more employment.

“Provision regarding this has been made in Constitution and we will implement it in the state soon. We are taking legal opinion to whether implement it through executive order or by making amendment in Act,” he said.

Kumar’s comment came after the Centre’s Constitution (124 Amendment) Bill 2019 for 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions to economically weaker sections in the general category was passed by the Parliament on January 9 on the last day of the Winter Session.

The new law has paved way for 10 per cent reservation to poorer sections of general category people across religions in education and employment.

The reservation bill will include all families whose total annual income is below Rs 8 lakh and must possess less than 5 acres of agricultural land. However, media reports indicate that the limit could change in the future.

While some states like Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh have already approved the quota bill, other states are also slowly implementing it in a bid to offer support to the economically weaker sections from the general category.

Besides employment, the Centre has proposed the move to be implemented in 40,000 colleges under 900 Indian universities from this academic year.
