Uttar Pradesh govt orders stay on NPR process amid coronavirus crisis

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a stay on the National Population Register process for the time being in the state due to the coronavirus crisis.

An order issued by the State Principal Secretary Jitendra Kumar on Friday stated that the ongoing work for the first phase of the NPR 2021 has been stopped till further notice. The NPR is a register of the usual residents of the country. It contains information collected at the local (village/sub-town), subdistrict, district, state and national level under provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

A copy of the order has been sent to all the District Magistrate and Mandalayukta. According to the order, all the work related to the NPR process in Uttar Pradesh will be postponed till further notice amid coronavirus crisis.

Uttar Pradesh has reported over 4,000 coronavirus cases in the state and more than 90 deaths due to the deadly new virus.
