This day, that year: Bangladesh’s memorable Test victory, England’s record chase in T20 World Cup history

With COVID-19 forcing the suspension of live sporting events, today we turn the pages of time to look back at the major instances that happened on this date. The coronavirus has brought the world to a standstill and thus there could not be anything better than reminiscing about those days.

Bangladesh’s historic Test win

On this day in 2017, Bangladesh Sri Lankan side for the first time, away from home, as they secured a 4-wicket win in their 100th Test.

It was at the P Sara Oval in Colombo, that Bangladesh were chasing 191 for win to create history. They came into this Test on the back of a forgetful past in the longest format of the game. Before this Test, Bangladesh had only 3 wins in 46 away Tests.

Before their memorable victory over Sri Lanka on foreign soil, their previous away from home win was against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2013.

Bangladesh were 22 for 2 at the start but then Tamim Iqbal stitched a 109-run third-wicket partnership with Sabbir Rahman to bail Bangladesh out of the situation. Tamim reached his fifty off 87 balls and scored 82 runs to help his side register a historic win.

England historic chase

On this day in 2016, England scripted history as they chased down the highest score in the history of the T20 World Cup. It was against South Africa in a group stage match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

England were chasing 230 in that match and their openers knew they had a big mountain to climb on. Jason Roy and Alex Hales had set up a strong base with 48 runs in just 2.3 overs. After South Africa fought back with quick wickets, Joe Root and Jos Buttler took the onus as they stitched 75-run stand for the 5th wicket.
