Indian men’s cricket team captain Virat Kohli and his wife, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, appealed to the masses to stay united in the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic and urged people to remain indoors.

Kohli and Anushka posted yet another video together in which they asked everybody to “wake up to the seriousness of this situation” and follow everything that has been told by the authorities and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who pleaded the citizens to remain indoors before announcing that India would be under a 21-day lockdown.

“These are testing times and we need to wake up to the seriousness of this situation. Please let us all follow what’s been told to us and stand united please. It’s a plea to everyone,” Kohli captioned the video.This is the second time the high-profile couple has posted a video, appealing to the millions across the country to stay safe and not venture out of their homes as the Covid-19 crisis deepens in India, with over 500 people contracting the virus and 11 losing their lives due to it so far.Kohli is among the many Indian sports figures who has regularly posted videos and messages spreading awareness about the virus. Sachin Tendulkar, PV Sindhu, Virender Sehwag Sourav Ganguly, Saina Nehwal, etc have all been taking to social media to tell their millions of fans and followers on how to avoid contracting the disease.

International superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on the other hand, have gone a step further by making massive contributions in the fight against the coronavirus.

Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes have joined forces to donate lifesaving equipment to Portuguese hospitals that are struggling to treat corona patients.

The two will donate equipment for two wards at Lisbon’s Santa Maria hospital, providing the wards with 10 beds each, ventilators, heart monitors, infusion pumps and syringes, the hospital said in a statement.

In Porto, the country’s second biggest city, the Portuguese pair will equip one ward at the Santo Antonio hospital with 15 intensive care beds, much-needed ventilators, monitors and other equipment. The three wards will be named after the men.

Messi meanwhile, has donated 1 million euros so far with donation being split between his Hospital Clinic in Barcelona and another medical centre in Argentina. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has also donated 1 million euros to a campaign launched by the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation and Medical College of Barcelona.

Former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep has donated medical equipment in her native country Romania while while compatriots Bianca Andreescu and Caty McNally have donated their signed tennis racquets to benefit ‘Athletes For Relief’.

Over 375,000 people have contracted the virus worldwide so far with the death toll going over 16,000 as of Wednesday.
