Lok Sabha clears Triple Talaq Bill as opposition walks out

he Parliament on Thursday passed the historic triple talaq bill that penalises the archaic practice of instant triple talaq after a charged up five-hour debate in the Lok Sabha. The opposition staged a walk out as government refused to accept its demand of sending it to the select committee.

On a day when leaders across the benches accused each other of playing to their vote bank, the government asserted that the bill was urgently needed as triple talaq was a rampant menace despite the ordinance. Finally, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2018 will supersede the previous bill passed on December 28, 2017 and will go to the Rajya Sabha for approval.

With the Congress, AIADMK, RJD, SP and other opposition parties walking out before voting, the bill was passed by the lower house with 245 members voting in favour and 11 members opposing the legislation.
