Kerala man dies after leaving police station, family alleges custodial torture

A 42-year-old man died after being released from police custody in Kerala’s Kozhikode. The family of the deceased has alleged custodial torture by the police.

The deceased, identified as P P Sajeevan, was detained for questioning in connection with a road accident. As per reports, an SI and a police constable attacked him in the station. Later, Sajeevan complained of chest pain and collapsed inside the premises of the police station.

Eyewitnesses say Sajeevan was waiting for an autorickshaw when he collapsed.

Three police officers who were at the police station during the incident have been suspended. This includes Vadakara station SI Nijesh, ASI Arun, and civil police officer Girish.

Following the incident, protests were carried out by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of CPIM, and residents of Vadakara against the police officers.

T Vikram, IG, North Zone, visited the police station and said there will be fair probe in the case. He checked CCTV visuals of police station.
