Jammu and Kashmir lost its special status and was bifurcated on Tuesday in a historic development as Parliament approved a resolution scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution and passed a bill to split the state into two Union Territories. The Congress was also split on Tuesday as a large number of leaders, mostly the young, supported the government’s move while the old guard, backed by Rahul Gandhi, opposed it. Currently, the situation is calm and peaceful across Jammu and Kashmir. While heavy troop deployment and Section 144 are still in place in the state, counter-infiltration and counter-terrorist grid of the Army is deployed both on the LoC and in the hinterland. Meanwhile, Pakistan reacted sharply on the move saying will take it up and fight it at all levels, with its PM Imran Khan warning India of dire consequences. PM Narendra Modi, who has been silent on the developments till now, may speak in Rajya Sabha today. Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to visit Kashmir after the conclusion of Parliament session. In an early morning development, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s press meet was cancelled following the demise of former External Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj.
