Assam makes 14-day quarantine mandatory for domestic flight passengers

With domestic flight services resuming from May 25, the Assam government has adopted its own standard operating procedure (SOP) and made it mandatory for all passengers coming to Assam to stay in quarantine for 14 days.

Assam Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that every traveller coming to the state will be quarantined.

“The pilot and crew members and other engineering staff of a flight will not be quarantined. The pilot and crew members will come into an isolated way to the hotel and go back. But excluding the pilot, crew members or any other engineering staff, every traveller in Assam will be quarantined,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

On the other hand, Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday announced that there will be no 14-day quarantine for passengers of domestic flights.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, the Assam Health Minister said the state government has made 14-day quarantine mandatory for all people who come into Assam from outside the state.

“We have launched a programme ‘ruthless quarantine with a big human heart’ by aiming to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the state. From now, the state government will spend expenditures of the people coming into the state from outside including food, hotel rent during the quarantine period,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

“Everyone who is coming from outside must be put under 14-day quarantine. The state government has allowed the Deputy Commissioners of the districts to spend maximum Rs 500 for food per person per day and Rs 200 for hotel rent under facility quarantine. The Deputy Commissioners will also spend maximum Rs 2,000 against the people under home quarantine,” he added.
