Another coronavirus-related death in Kerala, death toll climbs to 8

A non-resident Keralite, who returned from Abu Dhabi on May 11 to his home in Thiruvalla of Pathanamthitta district and tested positive for coronavirus a week later, died on Friday.

Joshy, 68, died at Kottayam Medical College where he was undergoing treatment.

Joshy was admitted in Pathanamthitta General Hospital with Covid symptoms on May 18 and shifted to medical facility after his conditions worsened on May 26.

According to a senior doctor who treated him, Joshy had a medical history of chronic diabetic and was on ventilator.

Joshy is the second non-resident Keralite to die in the state due to Covid-19 while a total of 192 have died in other Indian states and abroad.

This is also the second death due to coronavirus in Kerala in two days. On May 28, Anjayya, a native of Telangana who arrived in Thiruvananthapuram after he boarded a wrong train from New Delhi, died.

So far, Kerala has recorded eight Covid-19-related deaths and all deceased were senior citizens, except a four-month-old baby.

Currently 525 persons are undergoing treatment in various hospitals and around 1,15,297 people under surveillance in the state, with 1,14,305 under either home or institutional quarantine.

As part sentinel surveillance, 9,937 samples from high risk groups were collected and 9217 samples tested negative.

Currently, Palakad district has the maximum infections with 105 persons followed by Kannur with 93 and Kasargod with 63.

Kerala has executed high surveillance to avoid community spread of infection in the state and implementing targeted strategy in the districts of Palakad, Kannur and Kasargod where maximum number of infections are reported in the state.
