Chardham road project: BRO achieves breakthrough in tunnel construction beneath Chamba town

An a boost to the Rs 12,000 crore ‘Chardham’ project to connect Gangotri, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Badrinath, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has achieved a milestone in construction of a tunnel below the densely populated Chamba town on the Rishikesh-Dharasu road.

The BRO started work on the north portal of the tunnel in January, 2019 but the work on south portal commenced after October 2019 due to issues related to land compensation and safety of houses above the tunnel.Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the BRO is a key stakeholder in the prestigious chardham project and breakthrough of this tunnel will go a long way in facilitating speedy move of traffic.

Lt Gen Harpal Singh, DG, Border Roads stated the latest Austrian technology has been used in construction of the Chamba tunnel. HE added that the tunnel will be completed in October, 2020 — three months before schedule.
