India set to resume domestic flight operations as coronavirus cases see record-breaking spike, total tally at 1,31,868

Amid the record-breaking spike in coronavirus cases, India is set to resume domestic flight operations from Monday, after nearly two months of air travel being suspended due to the national lockdown.

Barring West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, flight operations across the country will resume from Monday and the home ministry has issued guidelines for the same. West Bengal will be resuming domestic flight services from May 28, while, Andhra Pradesh will be doing so from May 26.

West Bengal on Sunday said that it will be unable to resume flight operations from Monday as it is still involved with Cyclone Amphan relief work.

Maharashtra, on the other hand, announced that it will allow only 25 flights to take off and land in Mumbai from May 25, and will increase the number gradually.

India, meanwhile, has reported a record spike in coronavirus cases with 6,767 new cases of the novel virus as on Sunday morning, according to health ministry’s data.

With the new number of coronavirus positive cases, the country’s total tally has now climbed to 1,31,868. Covid-19 cases in India has seen the biggest spike for the third consecutive day. Out of the 1,31,868 total number of coronavirus cases in the country, 54,441 people have recovered from Covid-19 infection, while 3,867 have succumbed to it.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state in the country due to Covid-19, reported over 3,000 fresh cases on Sunday, after which its total tally crossed the 50,000 mark.
