Two policemen in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district were placed under suspension on Sunday after a video of them thrashing a man with a plastic pipe went into wide circulation on social media platforms earlier this week.
Madhya Pradesh Director General Police Vivek Johri told India Today over the phone, “There can be no defence or justification for such an act. Strict action is taken against the erring policemen.”
DGP Johri admitted that the video had caused immense damage to the image of the police force working day and night in these times of crisis. “Yes, it is damaging to the reputation of police which has been working very hard since day one of the lockdown,” he said.
The incident in question had come to light from Chhindwara’s district’s Pipla Naryanwar village. Officers, identified in the video, claimed they used force against the man since he was drunk and wreaking havoc. The video posted by scribe Devvesh Pandey has garnered close to 1.8 million views since it was posted on May 23.
