Coronavirus: Kolkata Police constables attack senior cop over lack of sanitisation measures

Several Kolkata Police constables attacked a senior police officer of the rank of deputy commissioner following allegations that a barrack where the constables were lodged was not sanitised after a sub-inspector tested positive.

The constables were deployed in the wake go Cyclone Amphan in strategic locations across the city. However, they started protesting outside the Police Training School (PTS) in the city.

Some of the constables who gathered outside PTS had lathis with them. When DCP (combat), who lives with his family at the PTS quarters, came out to pacify the agitated constables but was heckled and then chased through AJC Bose Road towards the Exide crossing.

He was beaten badly by the police constables and had to be hospitalised. No official comment on the incident has been released yet.

But lower-ranked Kolkata Police personnel said they are not provided with adequate hand sanitisers and masks. Some said they are only assured by senior officers that the problems will be solved, but added that nothing has been done in reality.

Some even complain about how they are not getting sufficient rest even after hours of stressful duty in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

While the sanitisation of constables’ barrack at PTS finally triggered the constables, it seems the lower-ranked police personnel in Kolkata are facing many other issues during the coronavirus crisis.
