India must test, trace and treat “aggressively” as it enters a new phase of its coronavirus lockdown and focus on keeping the mortality rate down so people aren’t afraid of getting infected, says Biocon Ltd chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.
“As soon as you start seeing the mortality rates drop, I think you will get that sense of confidence that this is not a disease to be so fearful of,” Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw told India Today TV. (Watch the full interview here.)
“Right now, we’re very fearful the world over because there’s no reliable treatment to really pull you out of the jaws of death. That’s the real scare people have.”
India must save both lives and livelihoods as the pandemic progresses, the billionaire entrepreneur said.
“And that’s why there is going to be a very careful and clear balance between how you manage the disease and how you lift the lockdown,” she said.
Both should be done simultaenously during the ongoing phase of the lockdown (in force till May 31), she said.
India’s total number of coronavirus cases has crossed 100,000; this includes over 3,000 deaths and more than 39,000 recoveries.
