Coronavirus: How birthday parties, engagements turned super-spreader events in Hyderabad

Even as the Telangana government considers giving lockdown relaxations in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), irresponsible actions of a few have resulted in escalation of the novel coronavirus cases in Hyderabad.

While a birthday party in LB Nagar was linked to as many as 45 people who tested positive for Covid-19, 25 other patients were traced to a similar celebration at a gated society in Malakpet.

Another cluster of 11 people, who attended an engagement function in Dhoolpet of Goshamahal, have reportedly now developed coronavirus symptoms. The authorities are awaiting results of 200 who attended the celebration. All these social engagements took place amid lockdown in May.

The businessman at Malakpet market, who was the first to test positive for Covid-19, had thrown a birthday party in May. The party resulted in 45 members of two families getting infected.

The incident forced authorities to create 15 new containment zones in in LB Nagar. Earlier, there were only two clusters.

The second cluster from Malakpet came from a residential apartment of Maddannapet, which houses 50 people. The complex became a hotspot of coronavirus after a birthday celebration left 23 people infected.

On Saturday, authorities shifted all these patients including an 11-month-old child and a pregnant woman to Gandhi Hospital for treatment.
