In a major breakthrough, the government of Myanmar on Friday handed over 22 insurgents to India. These men belong to six different insurgency groups from Assam and Manipur and were flown to India in a special plane.
This is first time Yangon accepted the Indian government’s request and handed over the insurgents who were arrested in 2019.
The insurgents are members of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) of Manipur. Others were actively involved with the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-S), Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) of Assam.
As many as 12 of the 22 insurgents are linked to four insurgency groups from Manipur and the remaining 10 are members of two Assam-based groups. Many insurgent groups of North Eastern region including ULFA (I), NSCN (K) have established their head-quarters, camps, base camps in Myanmar over the past few years.
The special plane first landed at Imphal airport and the Manipur police took 12 insurgents into their custody.
In Guwahati, a team of Assam police comprising senior officials of Special Branch took custody of the remaining 10 insurgents. Assam Deputy General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said a special plane had landed at Guwahati airport and the Assam police team had taken custody of 10 insurgents part of two state-based insurgent groups.
The deported insurgents have been identified as Rajen Daimary alias Rebgon, self-styled Home Secretary of NDFB (S), self-styled Captain Sansuma Basumatary alias Sarontsai, Gagaram Basumatary alias Captain Gamsha, Surju Brahmo alias Brammo SwrjiSula and Sukuram Brahma of NDFB (S), Shanker Deb Barman alias Silukar alias Siluksh, Bhajan Barman alias Tiger Koch.
