A migrant worker from Odisha’s Ganjam was allegedly beaten to death by Surat police in Gujarat on Thursday evening for reportedly violating social distancing norms during lockdown amid coronavirus crisis.
The deceased has been identified as Satya Swain, a native of Kullada village near Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district. He had been working in Surat for the past two years.
On the day of the incident, Satya had gone to a police station in Surat for registration for return to his home town.
Satya was reportedly accompanied by few other migrant workers, who also wanted to register themselves for return. The group had assembled in front of the local police station as registration was mandatory for train travel to their respective states.
The police then reprimanded in a bid to drive away the people around the police station area. The group dispersed and rushed into their repsective quarters in the Anjani Industrial Estate nearby.
