With the return of over 10 lakh stranded migrant workers to their native states with the help of more than 800 Sharmik Special trains in less than 15 days, the states face a new challenge.
After the Tablighi Jamaat meet in Delhi turned Covid-19 super spreader, which witnessed a sudden spike in cases in UP, MP, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Bihar and Assam in the first two weeks of April, internal migration through land and rail routes may trigger surge in novel coronavirus cases in India.
Bihar, UP, Odisha, Jharkhand and Rajasthan are crucial states which have received most of Sharmik Special trains since May 1. The onus is now on these states to arrange 14-day quarantine and strict monitoring.
With poor health infrastructure at district levels, bigger challenge for these states is to follow SOP like enhancing surveillance and contract tracing. Facilities and infrastructure quality of quarantine centres have already come under the scanner.
