Doctors in West Bengal have once again raised concerns on the way the state government is dealing with the novel coronavirus crisis in the state.
The Association of Health Services Doctors in West Bengal, which has around 3,000 members, has now written a letter to the Mamata Banerjee government and raised questions over the appointment of a north Bengal official.
“The additional responsibility bestowed upon Dr Susanta Ray to coordinate liaison activities related to Covid in north Bengal districts cannot be executed with due efficacy and aptness. Frequent allegations are coming to us on his undesirable and irrational interventions and high-handedness towards scientific management of Covid in NB districts and also his unnecessary encroachment on trivial issues in relation with HR issues,” the letter read. “The right to act with due independence by health administrators is frequently challenged, thus de-motivating work force. Serious discontent and grievance are being created amongst the front liner doctors and support staff,” it added
“Devoting valued time to non-yielding activities in relation to Covid issues indirectly deprives the masseswe feel that if additional task is further allowed to be continued to be complied by Dr Susanta Ray and that too in very inefficient manner, then it can be perceived that this is clear denial of govt spirit of action,” the letter read.
Speaking to India Today, association secretary Dr Manas Gumta said, “The Covid fight is team work and should be led by a senior health officer. There are six districts in north Bengal and there is one liaison officer made by government of West Bengal. We don’t have any enmity against this person but the command should be with a senior officer,”
