Nashik: NMC to develop 17 bus terminals, 389 shelters

Nashik: The civic administration has prepared a transportation plan for its city-bus service, as per which it will develop 17 state-of-the-art terminals, three depots and bus shelters at 389 locations.

Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to undertake the development of the depots and terminals on Design, Built, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis under public private partnership (PPP) mode. Around nine bus terminals will be off-roads and eight on roads. NMC has already invited expression of interests (EoI) from private companies.

As per the Nashik city bus transportation plan, the civic administration has identified plots for the development of the depots and the terminals based on availability of land. A portion of the plots selected for development of the proposed infrastructure would be utilised commercial and retail activities.

Officials from the civic administration said that NMC planned to operate the city bus service through private contractors. The buses would run on 112 routes and around 700 bus stops would be put in place.

Of the 17 bus terminals, 14 would be developed on plots owned by the civic administration and the remaining three on land owned by MSRTC, which would be obtained on lease.

“Commercial complexes will also be developed beside the bus terminal, which the contractor can lease for a period of 15 years. The contractor will have to transfer the terminal and the commercial complexes to NMC after the contract period ends,” said civic officials.

“Apart from bus terminals, we have also decided to develop bus shelters at 389 locations, including the existing 71 shelters. The contractor may use some space of the bus shelters for advertising. NMC will not bear any expense except for providing land for the project,” said the officials from the civic administration stating the bus shelters would have to be transferred after 15 years.
